Stephen Shore  American Surfaces (Phaidon, 2005)

Stephen Shore created this body of work in the early 1970’s, just at the point when colour photography was first receiving recognition within a formalised artistic context. Greatly influenced by Walker Evans, in 1971 Shore became only the second living photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Along with William Eggleston, Stephen Shore became one of the pioneers of colour photography, a master of the language of colour and an artist who boldly rejected the preciousness and nostalgia of the medium. American Surfaces is part photographic road trip, part sociological meditation on the American vernacular. Shore self-consciously captures the monotonous and every day, with a sophisticated spontaneity that translates the remarkable beauty of the overlooked and unseen.

Claxton Projects also recommends: Uncommon Places (Aperture, 1982)
